This morning you turned 4 years old. Daddy and I sneaked into your room just as you were waking up so that we could wish you a happy birthday. You woke up with a smile on your face and asked, “Am I 4 today?” You were delighted to know that you finally were indeed 4 years old.
We told you the story of your birth and what a happy day it was for us and how your Gogo and Papa were there to celebrate your arrival. You said, “Oh, I remember being born…it was scary.” (INTERESTING, because your birth was fairly traumatic for both you and I, so maybe you DO remember!!) Talking about your birth made me silently shed a few tears, because it was one of the most memorable and life-changing days for me and it always makes me feel a bit nostalgic to look back on it.
At 4 years old, you are a force to be reckoned with, a whirling mass of energy that defies physics at times. You have a temper that could light a room on fire and a sweet side that could melt the coldest of icebergs…the duality of those Gemini twins is firmly planted in your character. You are sensitive to your surroundings and are happy to spend your days at home. You like to make ear-shattering sounds that supposedly imitate power tools (they drill right through our ear drums). Your favorite author is Dr. Suess. You love pretending to be a baby animal who is just born and needs his mama to feed him and hold him…bunnies, mice and birds seem to be your favorites. You are incredibly adept at disassembling things and finding out how they work and then putting them back together. It’s scary. You love to construct vehicles and machines out of Legos and now TinkerToys. If we had a trampoline you would jump on it all day and if we had a fig tree in our yard I’d always know I could find you hanging out in its branches. Poop is funny…of course. You just willingly started to eat raw spinach and broccoli…WHOO HOOO! You love rock ‘n’ roll music and singing in the car with Mommy. Some days you think Calvin is such a “little cutie” and “a good baby boy” and other days you don’t want him anywhere near you (or me for that matter).
You’re growing up, Levi, right in front of my eyes every day. Some days I don’t notice it because I’m so caught up in the work of all that it is to be a Mommy. Some days it’s painfully obvious and I want to put you in a frozen time capsule. You have taught me some of the most immeasurable lessons of my life and I thank you.
Happy Birthday, today you are 4…let’s just see what kind of adventures this next year brings.
